Two Newports, and They Do Not Want the Same Machine

In the centre and the inner suburbs you have the Victorian and Edwardian stock: Maindee and the streets off Chepstow Road east of the river, then Pill, Baneswell, Stow Hill and Clytha on the west side. Bay fronts, solid walls with no cavity, Welsh slate roofs, small tiled or concreted front paths, low front walls and a rear lane behind. Plenty had the render painted at some point, or picked up pebbledash later.

Then the postwar and modern half: Alway, Ringland, Somerton, Bettws, Gaer, Duffryn and Malpas, plus Glan Llyn on the old Llanwern steelworks land, Jubilee Park on the former Alcan site at Rogerstone, and the newer builds up by the Coldra. Concrete interlocking roof tiles, thin coat render, uPVC roofline, block paving driveways almost without exception. Different failure modes, different method.

The Usk, the Levels and Why Newport Greens Up Fast

Newport sits on the Usk where it runs into the Severn Estuary, which carries one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world. The air coming off it is wet. South of the city the ground drops flat and low: Lliswerry, Uskmouth and the Gwent Levels, Nash, Goldcliff, Whitson and Redwick to the east, Marshfield and Peterstone to the west. That is reclaimed ground drained by reens, with the water table sitting close to the surface. Paving down there is still damp days after a drive up in Rogerstone has dried out.

Hard frost is rare here, so algae never really gets knocked back over winter. Add leaf fall in the wooded parts, Allt-yr-yn, Ridgeway, Beechwood and the streets around Belle Vue Park, and you get the familiar pattern. A north-facing back patio goes slick by October, moss furs only the shaded pitch of the roof, and ferns start growing out of the gutter joints.

Near the docks and the estates at Leeway, Queensway Meadows and Traston Road there is a second layer on top of that. Fine airborne grit binds into the algae and turns render grey rather than green. The same happens within a few streets of the M4 and the Southern Distributor Road. That film will not rinse off. It needs a detergent left to dwell before anything else happens.

Driveways, Patios and Block Paving

Block paving is the default driveway on nearly every Newport estate built since the 1990s, and it is the surface most often wrecked by a hired machine on a Saturday. Hold a lance too close and it fires the kiln-dried sand out of the joints. Empty joints let the blocks rock, spread and sink, and relaying a sunken bay costs far more than the clean did. We run a rotary surface cleaner at a fixed height so the top layer comes off evenly with no lance tracking, then re-sand every joint before we leave. Sealing is optional, and we tell you straight whether yours is worth sealing.

The older streets throw up surfaces the estates never see: plain concrete paths and drives, Victorian geometric tiled front paths, pennant stone slabs, tarmac laid in the 1970s. Tarmac will not take full pressure. Push it and you pull the bitumen out and leave the stone standing proud. Oil stains want heat and a degreaser rather than more pressure, which is what the hot water machine is for.

House Washing, Render Cleaning and Soft Washing

This is where the two Newports separate hardest. Glan Llyn, Jubilee Park and the newer Coldra builds are finished in thin coat silicone render or monocouche. A lance can take that straight off the board, or leave tracking that no later clean will hide. We soft wash instead: a dilute sodium hypochlorite mix with a surfactant, applied at low pressure, left to dwell, then rinsed at hose pressure. The growth is killed rather than blasted off, which is why a soft washed wall holds its colour for years instead of months.

On the Victorian stock the reasoning is different. Those walls are solid, with no cavity, so water driven in at pressure has nowhere to go except the plaster inside. Painted render, pebbledash and old lime work all get the same low pressure treatment, and soft or spalling brick gets looked at before anything is applied to it. Rear elevations off the back lanes in Maindee and Pill are usually the worst of it, because they see the least sun all year.

Roofs, Moss Removal, Gutters and Roofline

Concrete interlocking tiles are standard on the postwar semis and on every new estate here, and they hold moss far better than slate does. We scrape and lift the moss off by hand, then soft wash and treat with a biocide so it is slower coming back. We do not pressure wash roof tiles. High pressure takes the surface off a concrete tile and leaves it rougher than it started, so it holds moss faster next time, and on Welsh slate it lifts nibs and forces water up under the laps.

Gutters are cleared with a ground-based vacuum on carbon fibre poles, camera at the head, so you see the before and after without anyone going up a ladder. On the terraces around Maindee, Stow Hill and Baneswell the runs are shared, so your neighbour's leaves become your problem and half a gutter cleaned is no use. Fascias, soffits, cladding and conservatory roofs get a water fed pole and pure water. Solar panels and glass get the same, because pure water dries off without spotting.

How a Pressure Washing Job in Newport Runs

Nothing about the day should be a surprise. This is the running order.

1. Quote. Send photos and rough measurements by WhatsApp or email and we can price most jobs from those. Larger properties, awkward access and anything involving a roof get a visit first. Quotes are free and there is no chasing call afterwards.
2. Access and water. We need an outside tap and a socket, or we bring our own supply. On the terraced streets we check parking before the day, because the roads off Corporation Road and Chepstow Road are tight and where we can put the van changes the timings.
3. Protection. Planting gets soaked with clean water and sheeted wherever chemical will be close by. Windows and vents shut, drains checked so we know where the run-off goes, and anything loose gets moved out of the way.
4. Test patch. Every surface gets a trial area at the setting we intend to use, somewhere you will not be looking. If it is going to react badly, we find that out on a 300mm square rather than across the whole drive.
5. Cleaning. Surface cleaner across the open areas, detail lance on edges, kerbs and corners, soft wash for anything render, roof or painted. Hot water where oil or chewing gum is involved.
6. Finishing. Biocide so the result lasts, joints re-sanded on block paving, silt cleared out of your gully and off the pavement, then a walk round together before we load up.

Commercial Work Across the City

Landlords, letting agents, pubs, care homes and industrial units get the same kit and the same method. Forecourts and car parks at Spytty, Queensway Meadows and Leeway, service yards and bin stores, communal stairwells and steps on blocks of flats, cladding and signage, and graffiti off shutters and brick in the city centre and around the docks.

We run seven days, 7:00 to 21:30, so commercial work goes in early or late with nobody around. On a licensed premises the front is usually chewing gum and spilled drink rather than moss, and that is a hot water job with a degreaser. On the industrial estates it is the roller shutters, the fire escape stairs and the yard gullies that carry the mess, and the gullies are worth doing first so the silt has somewhere to go.
